There were two guys - long-time Deadheads I was rapping with and one of them did pretty much all of the talking for the pair... Talking about this show, that show, this set, that set, this Garcia-lick, this Phil-bomb, Weir stage-charging with Head-kicks, etc. And, it almost felt something like the movie Clerks! You know what I mean? The " Other Dude " was pretty much' silent', and really said nothing at all the whole time - and then... All of a sudden he chimed in & spoke... And the quote was simply-legendary & Classic! " I really just listen to'69 Dead ".
One of the more Classic & Fabulous! Dead Show " lot-comments " I have ever heard on the topic at hand... America's Best Ever Live-Band!!! Thought you might appreciated this story from yesteryear...
As this most definitely provides a very fine segue to the " Topic " here at hand... 2005 Grateful Dead Productions release of... Grateful Dead Fillmore West 1969 The Complete Recordings Box Set!!! And, on to the nitty gritty of this' Unmatched' 1969 Pigpen-Era Dead " Prime-Period " pro audio release. Firstly, this is one of the only 10,000 Box Sets made in the Limited Edition fashion...And Secondly, this is one of the Extremely Rare Box Sets which also includes the " Bonus Disc " the 11th Disc! Featuring ultra-rare tracks from 6/1968 - 6/8/1969 & 2/7/1970' Live' at the Fillmore West aka. The 10-CD Box Set portion itself obviously features the Fillmore 1969 " Complete " recordings... So inside of this Box Set you receive Four (4) individual (internal) Complete-Show Disc Sets, including every single note played during the consecutive Winter'69 Fillmore West Shows >>> 2/27/1969 - 2/28/1969 - 3/1/1969, and 3/2/1969 - 2-CD, 3-CD, 2-CD, and 3-CD Sets respectively. Is this Extremely-Rare Set an Absolute Beast!
The overwhelming reality on this set is that these are the Garcia " Gibson Guitar " days and the tone achieved is crunch-fuzzy, nasty & viscous when Jerry chooses to be in full-attack-mode. And also when he wants, you are treated to the subtle & sweet tones on the flip-side.
You also get the best of' both' worlds as the Acoustic-guitar gets strapped-on for Mountains Of The Moon - twice! All-throughout this run - and hard-pushes the Band to & through virtually each & every jam pocket - as you can most certainly hear his Classical Music influences with ease, as they are brilliantly entwined in the essence of Good Ol' Psychedelic Hard Jamming!
In that one-of-a-kind Late'60's G. " take no prisoners " style & fashion. While not to forget that Bobby is becoming quite the rhythm-guitar player right around this time - and as a result the string-section is indeed becoming a 3-headed Monster!& Mick are just about at a' Perfect' dual-drummer perfection, and when the timings run-around (which they do quite a bit in this era), these guys just never loose a step! S tones (and background' fills') are also what make this particular G. Song-material -- and of course last but not least... Rough & tumble stuff that is so insanely-tight that you could easily call it " Provocative Rock & Roll Beauty "!!!
It should also be noted from a historical sound-recording perspective, that' selecting' this run for release was almost a' no-brainer' for the Grateful Dead. Not only because of the caliber of the Band's performances over a straight 4-Show stretch... But also because Warner Bros. Provided them a state-of-the-art massive! Recording console which allowed the recordings and subsequent mixes & mastering to be just about as close to perfection, as perfection can ever get.Hence, the reason that these sessions were also' immediately' used in the " Live Dead " Live/Studio hybrid release later in 1969. This Very Rare 11-CD Box Set (10-CD + Bonus Disc CD) is without any question a' Must-Hear' &' Must-Own' for any & every Grateful Dead Fan who is serious about the pin pointed Glorious!
" Pre-1972 " period of the Band's Live development.
