Is -- Dick Latvala's Brilliant-Installment! Of the 29 Volume Series " Dick's Picks ".
And this one, as you may very well already know... Is sponsored by Travis Bean!
Well, that's one way of putting it, and here's another... I've heard in the past that this one, for all the right reasons - is an overall " Fan Favorite " of this entire Dick's Picks Series, and I've also heard many fellow Dead Fans say that it's the " best of them all ", one-of their personal favorite(s), or even' the' favorite. I do know that when Volume 8 (5/2/70) was released, Dick referred to it as The Show of All Shows! - and my assumption - though it's just my assumption, is that he must have felt the same way about this release - specifically with the 5/19 night in that' conversation'.
I'll openly admit that I'm a bit biased too on this one my fellow Fans, and here's why... 5/19 Set II was specifically THE! Analog cassette tape that turned me into a Deadhead. I know, a pretty serious claim - right? But yes I admit, it is true-fact. I had just got my hands on a small chunk of live G. Analog when I was a kid - for the very 1st time... And 5/19 Set II was in there, and because of that random occurrence - I'll be Grateful the rest of my life on this planet. Heck, I mean maybe it-was' meant to be' - I think so... I was at Rehoboth Beach, DE sitting on an outside screened porch with my best childhood buddy, and we had a boom box, Dead Tapes, and a few beverages in toe. I remember this like it was yesterday... And here's why - even though typed-characters don't even stand a chance, when it comes to talking about this Magical-one >>> I've got this tape still! Sitting here, next to me right now - and here's what it reads >>> Grateful Dead, Fox Theatre, Atlanta, GA, 5/19/77, II.....(A) Samson, Ramble One, Estimated, Terrapin > Playin (B) Uncle John > Drums > Wheel > China Doll > Playin. Folks, I'll be blunt... This Tape changed my entire life, and only in good ways...
I promptly got right On The Bus!! - and saw every single Live Dead Show! That I could possibly make happen, all the way until to the very-end.
This 5/19/77 Show is simply sheer Grateful Dead Magic!!! And of course, there is really no valid explanation as to how, where, or why this Show happened - to the Extreme! Sure, I mean look at this Donna-Dead unit when they were really " On " - look at the fact that the Grateful Dead were in their 12th year (usually post-prime, for most bands) - look at the fact that it's May 1977 on an apparent Red-Hot run - look at the Band's equipment - especially Garcia's curiosity & mastery! Of the MXR Distortion + pedal - look & listen to that Travis Bean, with an aluminum neck that really only the King of Rock'n Roll himself could make' stay' in tune!
- look at any of the facts surrounding... I mean this 5/19/77 Show was just " Meant-To-Be " -- and that's the only way I can really analyze it when I try to look any deeper. This is just start to end magic from all of the things that make a Dead Show great... Timekeeping (check) - everyone's having a great time (check) - when Phil's On The Band's On! (check) - Donna's vocal-deliver is pristine (check) - Bobby's rhythm playing is exceptional (check) - Keith's playing is insightful & pushing Jerry, while basically bringing him Joy!
- the Travis Bean artist Guitar in this Late-'70's Era - Mu-Tron / MXR / Mac / Fender-Twin / etc. And last but not least - in fact, I'll just go ahead now and say it...
And his playing is just one big step forward for guitar playing live... Being created right before the Band, and before this very-fortunate Atlanta crowd's eyes.As it goes without saying, when I heard that this would be pro-released way back in 2003 - I felt it was one of the best days of my life... Well, actually when I got it, played it & listened with the headphones. Both 5/19/77 & 5/21/77 are in this set, and as I'm sure you're well aware... Don't miss-out on Dick's Picks Volume 3 either, as it's truly the book-end of this set, falling on 5/22/77 in Pembroke Pines, Florida.
And must have been doing something right as Fans, for the Band to respond & deliver just like this! And also too, as it completely goes without saying... This might very-well be the Very Best! But it would be very-difficult to argue that it isn't at least a Top 3 or Top 5, no matter who you are. Trust me, as it will come more naturally then ever - as this one can do it all on it's own.
